Why Every Vertical Challenge Race Feels Like a Miracle , And Why We Need Your Help to Keep Going

If you have ever stood at the finish line of a Vertical Challenge event, you know the magic.

You hear the cowbells ringing across the snow. You see children crossing the finish line with huge, triumphant grins, arms raised in the air.

You watch families gathering around music, sponsor tents, and hot cocoa, sharing high-fives and celebrating a winter day well spent.

To anyone visiting for the day, it looks seamless. It looks like a well-oiled machine that just fires up every winter like clockwork.

I wish I could tell you it was that easy. But the truth is, every single race day we pull off feels like an absolute miracle.

For years, I’ve shared the highlights, the smiling faces, the podium celebrations, the incredible community spirit. But today, I want to pull back the curtain. I want to talk about the struggle. Because if we want Vertical Challenge to survive into the future, we need to be honest about what it actually takes to keep these start gates open.

The Illusion of Ease: What You Don’t See Behind the Scenes

When people ask me what I do, I usually say, “We run free family ski and snowboard races across the Northeast.” People smile and say, “Oh, that sounds like so much fun! You must love skiing all winter.”

And I do love it. I love this community with every fiber of my being. But behind every joyful weekend on the mountain lies months of sleepless nights, financial tightropes, and logistical puzzle pieces that threaten to fall apart at any given moment.

Running an experiential tour of this scale, bringing a massive festival village, timing equipment, staff, branding, and safety infrastructure to resort after resort, is an immense undertaking. And over the past few years, the weight of keeping it all afloat has grown heavier than ever.

The Ever-Shifting Reality of Sponsor Funding

One of the biggest misconceptions in event production is that major brands are just waiting to fund community programs with bottomless budgets.

The reality of sponsor funding today is drastically different.

Corporate marketing budgets shift constantly. Economic uncertainties, changing leadership at brands, and shifting marketing priorities mean that funding streams that we once relied on year after year can disappear overnight.

We spend months pitching, negotiating, and trying to secure partnerships just to lock in the baseline funding required to cover our operational costs.

When a sponsor pulls out at the eleventh hour, or when a brand budget gets slashed due to macro-economic pressures, it sends shockwaves through our entire organization. We aren’t a massive conglomerate with venture capital backing; we are a dedicated team pouring our hearts, souls, and personal savings into a grassroots mission. Every lost partnership is a direct threat to our season.

The Hidden Costs of Equipment and Logistics

Then there is the physical gear. People rarely think about the equipment required to run a multi-resort ski racing tour.

Timing gates, sound equipment, generators, branded inflatables, tents, the trailer, safety netting, it all takes a beating. Winter in New England is unforgiving. Sub-zero temperatures, heavy wet snow, ice, and constant teardowns and setups take a massive toll on gear.

Equipment maintenance isn’t a minor line item on a spreadsheet; it’s a constant battle against wear and tear. Replacing a single specialized timing component or repairing a shredded branded tent can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Add in soaring transportation costs, fuel prices, and resort logistics fees, and the math becomes terrifyingly tight.

Mountain Hosting: A Delicate Partnership

We are deeply grateful to the amazing ski resorts across the Northeast that partner with us to host our events. But hosting a touring event on a busy winter weekend is no small feat for a mountain operations team.

Resorts juggle snowmaking, lift operations, safety, parking, and thousands of weekend visitors. Securing dates, coordinating trail space, aligning with mountain management, and absorbing the operational costs of hosting a large-scale activation requires constant communication and mutual compromise.

Behind every approved permit is a mountain of paperwork, insurance hurdles, and logistical coordination that keeps our team on edge until the very last snow fence is staked into the ground.

Why We Keep Fighting for the Community

So why do we do it? Why subject ourselves to the stress, the financial anxiety, and the exhaustion year after year?

Because of you.

Because of the seven-year-old who is terrified of their first race, conquers their fear, and crosses the finish line asking when they can do it again. Because of the parents who tell us that Vertical Challenge is the only winter tradition their family can afford to experience together. Because of the incredible community of brands and partners who do believe in real-world, human connection over digital noise. We reached over 50,000 in-person attendees annually for a reason: because people crave authentic, shared moments in the great outdoors.

We Need Your Help to Keep the Tradition Alive

Writing this post is deeply vulnerable for me. For a long time, pride and the pressure to look “successful” stopped me from admitting just how hard the struggle has been. I didn’t want anyone to worry. I didn’t want to show any cracks in the armor.

But leadership isn’t about pretending everything is fine when it isn’t. True leadership means being honest about the challenges so that the community who cares can step up and help preserve what matters.

If you love Vertical Challenge, if your family has raced with us, if your brand believes in grassroots active lifestyle marketing, or if you simply want to see this incredible winter tradition survive, we need you.

We are actively looking for: * Mission-aligned brand partners and sponsors who want authentic engagement with active New England families. * Philanthropic supporters and community champions who believe in youth sports and outdoor access. * Media and promotional allies who can help spread our story far and wide.

If you or your company would like to help, whether through financial sponsorship, equipment partnerships, logistical support, or simply starting a conversation about how we can collaborate, please reach out to me directly.
